The lives and identities of two women intertwine—during World War II and the Korean War—to reveal the harsh realities of class division in the early part of the twentieth century.
"Can't I Go?" follows the lives of a Korean nobleman's daughter and her maid in the early 20th century. When the daughter's suitor is arrested as a Korean independence activist and she is caught up in the investigation, she is soon forced to marry one of her father's Japanese servants and travel to the United States. At the same time, her maid is sent to serve as a comfort woman for the Imperial Japanese Army. Comfort women are Koreans who were exploited by the Imperial Japanese Army in the most horrific ways.
Years of hardship, survival, and even happiness follow. In the aftermath of World War II, the two women return home, where they must unlearn the complicated lives they have led, try to reclaim their identity, and find their place in an independent Korea.
“Can’t I Just Leave?” is an exceptional historical work full of twists and turns, joys and sorrows, shedding light on the history of a nation; its pains and struggles, but at the same time it does not fail to focus on the lives of its two main characters.
